BIOGRAPHIES
Several of the artists have R.C.A. after their names. This indicates tat they members of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and have been recognized has having produced a significant body of work over a long period of time. They would all have work displayed in the National Gallery in Ottawa. The academy has about 500 members. Its history goes back to 1880 when the Marquess of Lorne, Govenor General of Canada founded the academy. It was modeled on the Academy of Arts in England.
(Leonard Parent) BASQUE - born 1927, in Trois Pistoles, Quebec. He acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Quebec and a Masters of Theology from the University Angelicum in Rome. From 1952 to 1972 he lectured in theology and art history at the University of Quebec in Rimouski. He and his wife founded a gallery in 1974. He 2001, he received the Order of Canada. In 1998 he had received an honourary doctorate. He has painted steadily since 1948 nd his paintings are in collections across Canada.
Bruno Cote - born 1940, in Quebec City. He died in 2010. Growing up in the family publishing business, he was exposed to the arts at an early age. After a few years with the firm, he left to devote himself to paintings. His paintings are in great demand. They appear in numerous public and private galleries.
Ed Drahanchuk - born in 1938. He is known as much for his pottery as he is for his paintings. He studied at the Alberta College of Art and received the Alumni Award of Excellence while there. He has participated in over 100 exhibitions in 15 countries. His work is in numerous collections.
Walter Drohan R.C.A. - born in Calgary, Alberta in 1932. He was a student at the Alberta College of Art and later became a teacher and president of the college. In 1975 he was elelcted to Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. His work appears in major collections of large corporations such as Shell Oil, Texaco, Manulife, etc.
Robert Genn - born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1936. He attended Victoria College at the University of British Columbia and the The Art Centre School in Los Angeles, California. He is recognized as one of Canada's most accomplished artists.
Illingsworth Kerr R.C.A. - born in Lumsden, Saskatchewan in 1905. He died in 1989. He got his art education at the Ontario College of Art under instructors from the Group of Seven (Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, J.E.H. MacDonald). Some of his most famous paintings are in the Alberta Foundation of the Arts and the Glenbow Museum. For twenty years, he headed up the art department at the Alberta College of Art. The main gallery at this institution is named after him.
James Kierstead - born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1932. He was raised in Southern Ontario and worked for several years as a police constable before starting his career as an artist. He paints with a palette knife and is known for his paintings of old mills. He has a large following and his paintings are in numerous collections.
Gary Morton - born in England, he was raised in New Brunswick. He now lives and paints at his studio in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a pointilist working in acrylic with pen and brush. It takes him a minimum of 52 hours to complete a painting. His work is found in private and public collections across Canada and the USA.
Fredric Remington - born in Canton, New York, in 1861. He died in 1909. His depictions of the old American west made him one of the most famous American painters, illustrators, sculptors and writerss in the United States. He completed his first sculpture in 1985. He is recognized as the inventor of the "cowboy" art form tht is very popular with collectors of Western art. His work appears in many museums, galleries and private collections.
Claude A. Simard R.C.A. - born in Quebec City in 1943. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1965. In 1981 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. From 1984 to 2001 he was a professor t Laval University. Seven of his designs have been used on postage stamps by Canada Post. His paintings are on permanent exhibition in galleriess and museums across Canada.
St-Gilles- born in Quebec City in 1954. He studied at the College of Sainte-Foy and holds a diploma in presentation esthetics. He painted with such artists as Mario Maurice and Bruno Cote. It was Cote who introduced him to the Charlevois region where most of his landscapes now originate. He held his first exhibit in 1979. His paintings re in numerous private and corporate collections.
Terry Tomaltry - born in Montreal in 1935. He learned to draw from comic books. He had a long career as Vice President and Art Director for the J. Walter Thompson ad agency. He has said that he made far more as an artist than as an executive. His paintings are in hundreds of private and corporate collections.
